Amputation
In this lesson, we will define what an amputation is and identify two types of amputation procedures. We will then look at some reasons an amputation would be necessary along with causes and risk factors that could lead to these conditions. We will review signs and symptoms and diagnostic testing that indicate an amputation is an appropriate surgical intervention. Next we will go over some potential complications that can occur as a result of an amputation along with important nursing assessment and interventions after the procedure to provide safety, pain management, and infection prevention. Side effects and considerations for medications will also be explored followed by important client teaching topics on preventing complications related to an amputation.
