In this lesson we are going to review a very common disorder that nurses need to become very familiar with, diabetes mellitus.  We will differentiate between the two types of the disorder and go over common signs and symptoms and diagnostic testing for each.  We will also introduce treatment methods, including medications and dietary management, used to help prevent serious complications of diabetes and help maintain stable blood glucose levels.

  1. Differentiate between causes of type I and type II diabetes mellitus
  2. Summarize signs and symptoms of type I and type II diabetes mellitus
  3. Identify diagnostics used to confirm both types of diabetes mellitus
  4. Review treatments used to manage symptoms of type I and type II diabetes mellitus
  5. Compare medications used to treat diabetes mellitus
  6. Formulate education topics for client’s diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
