In this lesson we are going to review some potentially dangerous complications of  diabetes mellitus called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, and hyperosmolar, hyperglycemic syndrome, or HHS.  We will outline both disorders and compare and contrast signs and symptoms and diagnostic testing of each. We will also give an overview of treatment methods, including medications and dietary management, used to help prevent serious complications and prevent recurrences.

  1. Differentiate between causes of type I and type II diabetes mellitus
  2. Summarize signs and symptoms of both type I and type II diabetes mellitus complications
  3. Discuss diabetc ketoacidosis (DKA)
  4. Explain hyperosmolar, hyperglycemic syndrome (HHS)
  5. Recognize causes and risk factors for developing DKA and HHS
  6. Review testing used to diagnose DKA and HHS
  7. Identify priority nursing interventions for clients with DKA and HHS
  8. Formulate education topics for client’s diagnosed with diabetes mellitus to help prevent DKA and HHS
