In this lesson we will first do a brief review of the gastrointestinal system, including the function of the esophagus.  Next we will identify two types of esophageal cancer and risk factors for developing this disorder.  We will summarize signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer and a variety of diagnostics used to confirm it.  We will discuss surgical and non-surgical treatment options and priority nursing interventions to prevent complications and maintain the client’s airway and effective respiratory pattern.
