Group B Streptococcus

In this lesson we will start with what Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is and the causes and risks to the newborn. We will explore how to assess for GBS, why it’s important during late pregnancy, and the priority nursing interventions.

1. Describe Group B Streptococcus, the GBS culture test, and what “carrier” and “colonized” mean
2. Describe 3-5 signs/symptoms of GBS infection in the newborn
3. Identify 2-3 nursing interventions for the pregnant client and 2-3 nursing interventions for the newborn with possible GBS infection
