What is the function of chloride in the body?  We are going to answer that question in this lesson and then identify some causes and risk factors for developing hyperchloremia, or high chloride levels.  We will then look at signs and symptoms that nurses will need to carefully monitor for. Finally, we will review priority nursing interventions and medical treatments along with potential complications the condition can cause that would require additional treatment.

Learning Objectives:

Upon the completion of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  1. Define hyperchloremia
  2. State normal parameters for chloride in the body
  3. Demonstrate understanding of causes and risk factors for developing hyperchloremia
