Transgender Nursing

In this lesson, we will define transgender and different types of sexual identity and affiliation.  We will also introduce terminology appropriate for discussing sexual and gender identity.  We will then summarize some health disparities that clients within this vulnerable population may experience.  Finally we will review nursing interventions and communication techniques aimed at promoting a therapeutic relationship and minimizing judgement while working with clients that are transgender or that identify with different sexual or gender orientations.

2. Recognize culturally appropriate terminology related to gender identity
3. Illustrate health disparities within the transgender population
4. Evaluate communication techniques to enhance therapeutic relationships with clients who  are transgender
