In this lesson we will start with the particular risks of Tuberculosis (TB) for pregnant women and infants, then cover assessments, diagnostics, and treatments of TB. We will explore complications of the infection, nursing assessments and priority nursing interventions, including transmission precautions.

 

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:

  1. Define Tuberculosis in Pregnancy, and 2-4 modes of TB transmission from mother to infant, and 1-2 possible risks of the illness
  2. Describe 3-5 symptoms of TB in the pregnant client, and 2-3 signs of TB infection in the newborn.
  3. Identify method of diagnosis, 1-2 possible treatments, and methods/precautions to reduce transmission from any client who has TB to others.
  4. Describe 2-3 common side effects of Rifampin and isoniazid.
